Most of you who have known me for a while have heard several times my desire to move the martial arts into a more academic pursuit. Well, yesterday, I moved another step forward on this goal.
After a couple conversations with Amerstate University (AU), I sent in my resume to be considered for a Commisioner position representing Minnesota. The University board approved me for the position and I was formally appointed yesterday.
This will be an interesting position. I get to be involved with the growth of the martial arts, specifically Taekwondo, as an academic degree program. Amerstate University is accreditted by the Wisconsin Department of Education. It has also begun the process to receive regional accreditation (to put it on par with the University of Minnesota and the University of Wisconsin) but this process takes several years. Currently, it offers a Masters of Martial Science degree. The curriculum for an Associate and Bachelor degree programs are being finalized to be added soon.
I hope to become involved in bringing the programs to Minnesota. This would fit the goals I’ve had for the 501c3 non profit, Sparrow Institute, that I set up several years ago. A partnership has already been mentioned with AU. The need to find a board and finish the Minnesota Department of Education registration are next. I’ll admit that, while I’ve done pretty well with the registration paperwork, I have poor connections and almost no network for finding board members and partners. Do you want to help?
Anyway, I look forward to working with the AU faculty and staff while helping the AU students complete their degrees. Let the new journey begin!
